ICF is launching a new project in Uzbekistan: preservation of the Gafur Gulyam Museum in Tashkent
This year, the International Chodiev Foundation (ICF) has launched a new project in Uzbekistan – the development and preservation of the cultural heritage of the House Museum of Uzbekistan’s famous poet, Gafur Gulyam.
The House Museum is located in Tashkent and was created in the house where the poet lived and worked between 1944 and1966. The building, constructed in 1943, is one of Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage sites and consists of a number of rooms preserved in the same condition as during the poet’s lifetime – his workshop, library, recreation rooms and more. The museum fund includes personal belongings of Gafur Gulyam, such as books, manuscripts, lithographs, photographs and negatives, graphics and watercolours, illustrations, letters and telegrammes, works of art and more. The House Museum was opened for the public in 1983.
In 2003, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gafur Gulyam, another building was unveiled – a two-storey annex designed to host the museum’s expositions and archive.
‘Uzbekistan has a truly unique cultural heritage, celebrated not only by people of Uzbekistan, but also by cultural connoisseurs around the world. Our task is to contribute to the preservation and development of this invaluable heritage. The International Chodiev Foundation is very pleased to support the restoration of the Gafur Gulyam House Museum. We consider it our mission to preserve it,’ said Asal Chodieva, member of the Audit Committee of the ICF Representative Office in Uzbekistan, who oversees this project.
The social partnership agreement has been signed between the Agency of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the International Chodiev Foundation earlier this year. The Foundation has allocated funds for Stage 1 of the project.
