Gafur Gulom’s Historic Manuscripts and Lithographic Works Restored

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the restoration of 20 rare manuscripts and lithographs by Gafur Gulom, one of Uzbekistan’s most celebrated poets and writers.

This significant cultural preservation initiative, supported by the ICF and international heritage experts, highlights Gulom’s enduring legacy.

Gafur Gulom (1903–1966) was a towering figure in Uzbek literature, renowned for his poetry, prose, and translations that bridged traditional and modern literary styles. His works, such as Shum Bola (Mischievous Boy) and Yodgor (Memoir), are regarded as masterpieces of 20th-century Uzbek literature. Gulom’s writings often reflected themes of social justice, humanism, and national identity, earning him widespread acclaim and the title of People’s Poet of Uzbekistan.

The House-Museum in Tashkent, dedicated to his life and work, houses a rich collection of Gulom’s personal belongings, original manuscripts, and rare books. The recently restored items include handwritten drafts of his poems, early lithographic prints of his works, and historical documents that shed light on Uzbekistan’s literary heritage.

The delicate restoration process, carried out by a team of skilled conservators, involved several meticulous steps to preserve the fragile documents. Each manuscript was carefully examined to determine its condition, before undergoing the process of cleaning, stabilization, deacidification and repair.
