ICF sponsors the exhibition of icons by Japanese artist Hiroko Kozuki
Moscow, Russia – An exhibition of icons by the Japanese artist Hiroko Kozuki opened today at the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (IOPS).
‘Treasures of the Divine World: Japanese Icons of Hiroko Kozuki’ is held with the support of the International Chodiev Foundation and the Mikhail Abramov Society.
The exhibition shows 25 icons painted by Hiroko Kozuki in full accordance with the ancient canons of Russian icon painting. As the wife of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Russia, Hiroko Kozuki spent many years studying the Russian language and culture, visiting temples and monasteries.
At the opening, Hiroko Kozuki expressed gratitude to the organizers and spoke about the path she had travelled in understanding the art of painting icons. ‘I first started painting icons in an international icon painting class in Moscow in the 1990s. I would like to express my deep gratitude to Elena Antonova, my teacher, who was the first to introduce me to the art of creating Russian icons. My husband and I travelled a lot across Russia, we saw the beautiful ancient cities and had the opportunity to get acquainted with the history of Russia and its culture’, said Mrs. Kozuki.
Dr Chodiev, founder of the International Charitable Foundation and established japanologist, commented: ‘We have been friends with the Kozuki family for a long time. But it still remains a mystery to me how this delicate, fragile woman, being deeply passionate about the art of her native country, was able to become so immersed in such an extremely complex subject as Russian icon painting. When I got acquainted with the objects of her work, I was captivated’.
The works of Hiroko Kozuki can be seen in the Museum of the History of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society until 9 November 2023.
