Itchiku Kubota’s masterpiece Featured in Touring Exhibition ‘Kimono: Garment, Canvas, and Artistic Muse’

25 May 2025

Kawaguchi, Japan – The International Chodiev Foundation (ICF) is pleased to announce the launch of the touring exhibition ‘Kimono: Garment, Canvas, and Artistic Muse,’ which explores the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of traditional Japanese textile art.

This remarkable exhibition will travel to major cities across the United States over the next four years.

Curated by Meher McArthur, a distinguished Asian art historian specializing in Japanese art, the exposition presents 46 works, including historical kimonos, contemporary pieces, and multimedia interpretations by ten international artists.

One of the exposition’s featured artists is Itchiku Kubota (1917–2003), renowned for reviving the nearly 500-year-old tsujigahana dyeing technique. His work elevated the kimono from traditional clothing to contemporary art, with breathtaking designs that were often displayed as installations. This year’s exhibition includes his piece ‘Fuji and Woodland Covered in Fog’ (1994), a stunning silk kimono depicting Mount Fuji.

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin, USA, has become the first stop of the touring exhibition; the exhibition will reopen on 9 September at the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
