Patokh Chodiev is awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, one of the highest orders of Japan

International Chodiev Foundation (ICF) is pleased to announce that its Founder, Dr Patokh Chodiev, is awarded The Order of the Rising Sun, one of the highest honours of Japan.  This Order recognises Dr Chodiev’s long-standing contribution to the development of the economic and cultural relations between Japan and Russia.  The corresponding Decree was announced by the Japanese Embassy in the Russian Federation today.

For over 20 years Patokh Chodiev has been actively supporting the scientific and humanitarian projects and promoting the international cultural exchanges. One of the priorities of International Chodiev Foundation, established by him in 1996, has been the development of the Japanese relations and promotion of the Japanese culture in Russia.  In recent years, under the direct patronage of Dr Chodiev, key cultural events have been held in both Russia and Japan.  For the last 10 years, the Foundation has sponsored J-FEST, the largest and the most vibrant festival of contemporary Japanese culture in Russia.  Since 2015, ICF has been sponsoring the Festival of Russian Culture in Japan.  In 2019, Patokh Chodiev and the ICF provided significant assistance to the Year of the Russo-Japanese Cultural Exchange.  Among the ICF’s most significant cultural projects are international exhibitions of the unique kimono collection by the Japanese artist Itchiku Kubota, and the organization of the Russian tour of the famous traditional theatre Shochiku Grand Kabuki from Tokyo in 2018.

Mr Toyohisa Kozuki, the Japanese Ambassador to Russia, said: ‘In the past years, thanks to ICF and Dr Chodiev personally, we saw the dynamic development of the cultural dialogue between Japan and Russia.  Truly important and outstanding cultural events came to life, fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.’

Dr Patokh Chodiev, ICF’s Founder, commented: ‘As a Japanese scholar, I have always been interested in the development of the Russo-Japanese relations.  The Russians and the Japanese are very curious.  They have a deep mutual interest in each other’s culture, art, traditions, work ethics and tourism.  Although I am no longer actively involved in the Japanese-Russian diplomatic relations, I continue to support them in different capacity.  I am greatly honoured to receive such high awards from both Japan and Russia, almost simultaneously – it moves me deeply and encourages me to continue this work to the best of my abilities.’

The Order of the Rising Sun, one of the highest awards in Japan, was established in 1875.  It is awarded in the name of the Japanese Emperor to citizens of Japan for their exceptional civil or military merit, and to foreign nationals for their outstanding achievements in the development of the international relations and promotion of the Japanese culture.
